Zawiat Ahansal
Cultural and Geological Site — High Mountain
Overview
The official Zawiat Ahansal geosite (GS-9) is an exceptional site combining spectacular Jurassic geology with cultural and religious heritage of great value.
Zawiat Ahansal is a high-mountain village located in the gorges of the central High Atlas, at the confluence of geology and history. The zaouia (religious and educational centre) founded in the 15th century by Sidi Said Ahansal is an important pilgrimage site. The surrounding Jurassic geology — limestone cliffs, deep gorges, sedimentary formations — provides a spectacular setting. The site is the starting point for ascents of Jbel Taghia and hikes through the gorges.
