Tizi-n-Tighrist Lamellibranchs
Jurassic Bivalves — Fossil Tethys Sea
Overview
The Tizi-n-Tighrist fossil deposit is exceptional for its richness in Jurassic lamellibranchs (bivalves). These fossils testify to the marine environment of the Tethys Sea that covered the High Atlas approximately 170 million years ago. The well-preserved species allow precise reconstruction of the Middle Jurassic marine paleoenvironment.
This site constitutes a reference for the paleontology of the Moroccan High Atlas. Lamellibranchs (bivalves) are marine mollusks that lived in the shallow waters of the Tethys Sea. Their exceptional preservation at Tizi-n-Tighrist allows paleontologists to study the marine biodiversity of the Middle Jurassic and reconstruct the environmental conditions of the time.
