Cathedral of Imsfrane
Spectacular geological formation of the High Atlas
Overview
The rock known as the Mastfrane Cathedral is an imposing cliff that culminates more than 300 m above the Assif n'ou Ahançal stream. The sediments are formed by the accumulation of conglomerates and sandstones resulting from the erosion of the Atlas reliefs and their transport as alluvium by ancient watercourses during the Miocene-Pliocene (between −2 and −10 million years ago).
These deposits were subsequently raised to their current altitude (Atlas orogeny) and sculpted by erosion, giving them their spectacular current shape. The geological cross-section reveals four stratigraphic units: (1) Bajocian oncholite limestone (−170 Ma), (2) Bathonian limestones and marls (−165 Ma), (3) Upper Miocene conglomerates and sandstones (−7 Ma), (4) Pliocene conglomerates and sandstones (−2 Ma).
The magnificence of Imsfrane, coupled with the striking contrast of brown rocks, green Aleppo pines, and red soil, presents a truly impressive spectacle. You can enjoy the panorama at the base of the cathedral or venture to the summit by climbing.
